1930s Letters.

In the 1930s olympian Jesse Owens won 4 Gold Medals, the Hindenberg exploded, the comic book hero "Superman" debuted. There were also, thankfully, lots of letters! Read on for more on the Roth, Lindsay, Cicely, and Gay collections.

Roth (1938 - 1939)

The 20 Roth letters are between a husband and wife -- Kaye and Nelda “Nonie” Roth -- in Pennsylvania, from the Spring of 1938 to the late Summer of 1939. The letters detail Nelda's confinement in hospital and Kaye's construction of their home.

Lindsay (1935 - 1940)

The 14 Lindsay letters are dated between August 1935 to October 1940 between Walter and Virgie Lindsay, based in Tennessee. Most often Walter and Virgie are separated, with Walter working whatever jobs he can find to support their small family.

Cicely (1931 - 1937)

The 7 "Cicely" letters are an incomplete series of letters written from 1931 to 1937 to a young woman living at times in Northern Ireland and England.

Gay (1939 - 1940)

The 20 Gay letters are written to Katherine Gay of Texas from her beau, Jimmy, between 1939 to 1940. These letters are a snapshot of life and history just at the outbreak of World War II. The United States would enter the war effort in 1941.
