The Christmas Edition

It's time to bring you the 4th annual Flea Market Love Letters Christmas Newsletter. In 2024's final edition of the newsletter we take a look at the letters featured this year, share in a soldiers 1944 Christmas reflections and talk about a new mail movie plus more, including a very exciting letters event for our friends in the States...

The photo above of a lantern pillar box came from my family's annual trip to the Dublin Zoo winter lights experience. I gasped when I saw it, of course! As soon as we got home I had to put on my favorite letter-themed Christmas movie 'Klaus', naturally.

2024 in Letters

It wasn't a big year for the number of letters featured so much as for the amazing stories shared within them. In 2024, we featured three series of letters: Davis, Lew and Miller.

Together we visited the 1920s and 1940s through the letters. As always, we extend the sincerest gratitude to the letter writers.

We're busy prepping the next series to feature starting in early 2025. Keep your eyes posted to social media for that news soon!

In the meantime, cozy up this winter with some of the 700 letters already featured on the archive website. 

Christmas 1944

This powerful excerpt from a 1944 letter was written by Bill Ahern to his parents on spending a Christmas in the newly liberated France: 

"The chaplain spoke of the war and how it may not be such a bright Christmas for most of the world, in fact thing[s] were very black for some. Then he said the blacker the night the brighter the star, meaning [k]no[w] matter how black things look we must still have hope and faith in the things in which we believe, for the brightness of day will come. "

Six Triple Eight

Looking for something to stream on those long days between Christmas and New Years? Check out the new Netflix film "The Six Triple Eight". A World War II drama directed by Tyler Perry, the movie depicts the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the only all-Black, all-female Women's Army Corps unit—tasked with clearing a massive backlog of undelivered mail to boost soldiers' morale.

Letters Live NYC

The amazing team behind the Letters Live events have announced not one but THREE shows in New York in 2025. If you are based in the U.S. and love letters these events are not to be missed -- a mystery cast of guests read an assortment of letters 'live' on the night for the audience. 

Stamp Art

Recently I was at a Christmas fair here in Ireland and I found this absolutely amazing laser cut 'Eire' stamp piece by the artist '@Chole_Papercraft'. I knew I had to have it! Just this morning I found the perfect spot for it -- right by the front door.  It looks like she has print versions available-- if you like me love postal pieces this might be a perfect addition to your home.
