October 1st is 'World Postcard Day' as established by the postcard exchange program Postcrossing. That special day in the letter loving year has inspired me to put -- as inspired by the postcard! -- a few short thoughts together on this most special piece of post, including a visit to a postcard themed library exhibit and my tips for getting started writing!

'Postcards Across America':

Recently, I had the great occasion to enjoy the Cleveland Public Library's 'Postcards Across America' exhibit which encourages young (and old!) folks to put pen to paper and write a postcard.

I particularly loved this graphic on the Library wall which spelled out how to write a Postcard. If we're going to concern ourselves with the lifespan of the letter it will be the young people who carry on this 'dying' art. That's why I loved this approachable and nonjudgemental exhibit.

Tips for Writing Your Postcard:

If you're thinking about sending someone a postcard but don't know what to write, that's a-okay! If you're anything like me you may have a little (okay, not so little) stash of postcards. Grab a handful and write a letter across the backs and mail the handful of cards in one envelope as a sort of 'collage' letter! This can help offset the cost of stamps and make a dent in your postcard supply.

Are you someone who feels they have to write about whatever is on the front of a postcard? Or do you simply put down whatever thought flies into your mind when you put pen to paper? Whichever your preferance grab a few postcards and give yourself the grace to write a short, sweet note to someone you know...or don't!

Did you know that the charity From Me to You accept letters written on postcards for their Donate a Letter program? Just write across the back of your postcard(s) and send them to the charity -- they'll do the hard work of matching your donated letters with individuals experiencing cancer.

Finally, one of my favorite traditions started by my friends on our annual 'Letter Ladies' trip is for several people to write 1 postcard to someone! This can be a great way to include someone in a trip or just spread the kindness of showing you thought about them.
